On Surveillance Capitalism

Shoshana Zuboff, a professor at Harvard Business and Law Schools has published a book Surveillance Capitalism. In it she outlines how we as a people face a change in conditions unlike any other we have. One that may have some echoes from the industrial revolution and the era of totalitarianism but that are markedly different in important ways. She outlines how massive corporations aggregate data and surveil each one of us, offering to their business customers not merely insights on what we might do next, but even the ability to manipulate us into what we do next. We highly recommend reading the book if you can make the time. If not here’s some good podcast interviews to get a sense of it. Triangulation and Hidden Forces.
